SOTU: Cheshire/Kyou, c. Day 17
So. I had a question meme but then it died and I had things to talk about. So. Yes.
CURRENTLY, CAT IS IN A WEIRD PLACE. He's jittery about other teams and about the shit going on around him, but lemme take a moment to divide this up into different points. Such as his memories, his team, other teams, and the Gallery as a whole.
With regards to his memories, Kyou has pretty much a solid view that his life was pretty shitty and it was due to his being born cursed with the Cat's spirit. He doesn't know what that's all about yet but he does know how his large and seemingly wealthy family regard him because of it. It really really sucks, but on the other hand, he does have people who care about him!
The memories with Tohru have been pretty basic--in one, she was almost like the background except for the chocolates things and the fact that he kind of pays her quite a bit of attention; in the other, he and she are alone on the beach because they weren't invited to whatever thing his family is doing--her because she's an "outsider" and him because he's the Cat. This had a lot more impact, especially in his feelings for Tohru. He knows she's important to him and he knows that she knows about him, his curse, and his true form. For some reason he can't fathom currently whatsoever. He doesn't quite know this feeling he has toward her is "love" necessarily because he's a dumb kid and also an amnesiac and this memory took place before he canonly realizes it himself. She's a light in his life that he feels completely undeserving of.
On the flipside, there's the memory with Kazuma. This was a HUGE memory for him to first remember Kazuma with. Because it's the start of it all and it shows that the beginnings were very much not perfect. He went from an incredibly shitty situation (amnesiac!self not realizing what the situation in fact was but IT'S NOT HIS FAULT) to having someone there and loving and caring about him. This is huge. It's so huge that even in the memory, tiny!Kyou was thinking to himself and wondering about all the reasons Kazuma could have taken him in--HE WAS PRETTY SURE THERE WAS AN ULTERIOR MOTIVE!--but even with an ulterior motive, that Kazuma was even willing to take him in and give him that love meant a lot. It wasn't the same thing as what his mother did. Kazuma didn't try for perfect. He didn't shield or hide Kyou away, he simply picked him up and held him. And that means the world to Kyou.
In addition to this, he remembers somewhat his cousins (Shigure, Yuki, and Kagura) but it's vague and general, so it doesn't leave much of impression other than the feeling that they are like him and not "normal". But more than that, there is another sensation of being on the outside even with having this in common with them--because he's the Cat.
With all of this in mind, Kyou has a pretty solid grasp on the whole My Life Is Terrible Because I Was Born The Cat issue he has. Even with those memories of Tohru and Kazuma, they are burdened with this fact of his life and it colors pretty much every memory he gets back. It's wearing and tiring and Kyou pretty much has been experiencing a sort of disenchantment with his own life and hopes for things to turn out well for him in the end, even in Decollage. The memories with Tohru and Kazuma that he's gotten recently have, of course, buoyed him up some but there's still competitions going on and whatever the hell is going on in the Gallery and his team...
Speaking of which...
Kyou adores his team. He still doesn't feel like he has a cohesive role in the group--except maybe being Hatter's YOUR STUPID maschot, but that doesn't lessen his love for them because... well. He's used to that. And if anything, they at least have not been treating him like his family had. They're pretty chill and accepting individuals, overall. Canary has been an interesting group of people thrown together with no memories and somehow working together in spite of being pretty individualistic? Alice getting caught by the Bigger Picture was the first blow to any idea of cohesivenss Kyou may have seen from his team. Queen then disappearing was another time. Pretty much, Kyou knows he's in for a world of pain by caring about his team--because they're going to get killed in a competition one day and it will hurt. A lot. But this wasn't really a MAJOR point for Kyou until Duchess showed up and Kyou took Hatter's memory. Now he's completely not sure how he will handle that eventuality. He's terrified of something happenng to his team and he knows he's powerless to stop it. He's definitely not one of the more capable Canaries--he doesn't remember being a fighter, he transforms into a cat whenever a girl hugs him which is troublesome and can be exploited, and he has another form that he can't even bring himself to tell his team about...
Overall, with his team, Kyou still doesn't seem himself as having much of a role and therefore feels more like the one who just. Is kind of there? If anything, his role is to yell and punch stupidity, but then he has moments of dumb and fail himself and... fffff...
Current teammates:
- King: Kyou's pretty comfortable with him! They've been around since the start, so they have a pattern and know what to expect from the other. Difference being somewhat that Kyou's more willing to call BS on King's BS but generally, Kyou knows King needs his role as much as Kyou needs him to have that role. And it kind of sucks sometimes but that's also why Kyou doesn't mind King going out and having drinking sprees. '-' Everyone has their coping mechanisms...
- Rabbit: WAS IN AN AWKWARD PLACE because Kyou got mad at people after Sophie's competition because he was drunk and Rabbit was there and basically trying to make sure his team would be okay but Kyou read it more like he was being told that he's incapable of taking care of himself. He's still hurt that Rabbit pretty much has written Kyou off as someone who can't take care of himself in competitions. He likes Rabbit for being another normal person who thinks along the same lines as Kyou in some regards--but is an idiot in others. But he also gets annoyed and angry at Rabbit for being able to vocalize things Kyou feels like he CAN'T. Which isn't fair and makes Kyou feel worse about himself. Generally, he's pretty chill with Rabbit but not sure... where he stands with him...
- Gryphon: still a little sis-bro thing that Kyou knows will stick up for her team and will shounen punch it when necessary. He mostly just leaves her to do her own thing but likes to tease her because she's one of those dumb fighter types or something. also little sibling thing.
- Hatter: Kyou is pathetically attached to him. Largely, because Hatter was the Canary to replace Alice, Kyou had been ready to be angry and upset over him replacing his teammate. But then their first conversation ended up with Hatter digging around in his head and Kyou freaking out and worrying because CANARY POKING HIS FINGER IN HIS EYE SOCKET AAAAHHHH. By this point, the teammate mindset was pretty solid, s-so... yeah. And then Hatter's just been a continual cause for worry and fretting over which, for Kyou, translates into yelling at and scolding and generally being loud and sarcastic at. He hadn't quite clued in that Hatter regarded him any differently from the other Canaries (BECAUSE HE KEPT IGNORING HIM AND GETTING INTO TERRIBLE SITUATIONS ANYWAY!) but the memory-sharing incident definitely gave him a rude awakening not only to how much Hatter regards him but also what he would do if Kyou ever gets hurt or, worse, killed. And this scares him sort of a lot, but Kyou's... been working on keeping up a front of Being Able To Deal With Shit, s-so... yes.
- Duchess - B-BABBY TEAMMATE \o/;;;; She comes in after Queen's been taken by the Big Picture and terrible Dragon competition and things going weird in the Gallery with new teams and Systems shit, so it's a pretty hectic time for her to come in! And Kyou's been stressed out so his... first impression with her could have been better but instead, she just figures he's uncooperative and full of dumb feelings. However, he genuinely likes her (and can tell she's pretty... dumb. about some things--like "ranking" and "authority levels") and is glad to see that she's another person who takes the team thing seriously because it. Means a lot to him? He is a bit concerned that she seems to constantly want people to give her decisions and direction on things, but also figures it's because she doesn't have any memories yet. So mostly, he's just been warning her about the dangers and telling her what NOT to do and generally just being around if she needs him '-'
Outside of Canary, Kyou pretty much is wary of other teams because he knows they will bus Canary eventually! It's an inevitable thing especially when people are saying they want to "play fair". Playing fair means that people will hit people they don't normally hit and if there are three or more teams that say "We won't hit Canary" in most games, then one game will come along where they will all decide that, suddenly, it's time to hit Canary! Or so the logic goes anyway. This is also a direct feedback sort of thing to his memories where he believes that no one will be there to save him. His family is HUGE and only ONE person saved him from a terrible situation. Only ONE "outsider" managed to get in close enough to be what Tohru is to him. Canary is the only team he ever feels truly SAFE with, especially in competitions...
Hoooowever... Lilac does have a very high ranking of Team He Would Trust Outside Of Competitions. He knows 5/6 of them and is actually closest to Trucy and Musica, two people he's known since the start. He likes Cleo and Angel and thinks Gourdy is a bit weird but harmless... so basically, if he ever has an issue that his team can't help with, Lilac would be the first team he would turn to.
Second to them would be Teal--mostly because of Coco. Buuuuut... with their recent addition, Kyou will be even more skittish than normal. He doesn't recognize Liquorice physically. She's not someone in one of his memories, she's a stranger to him--EXCEPT THAT THE CAT INSIDE HIM SAYS THAT SHE'S NOT. Somehow. There is something about her that is very familiar and weird and--oh god, it's almost exactly the same as what he feels around his cousins in his memory. And this is why Kyou is a bit freaked out and directs her to her team and basically kind of /quits as fast as possible. He's not sure what's going on or if he SHOULD know her or if it's some weird thing because he's cursed, but either way, he doesn't like it. But at the same time, it's that terrible feeling of being on the outside looking in--same but different.
With the new teams, Kyou's already heightened sense of paranoia has been increased a bit. He already knew Canary would get bussed by other teams one day, but two more teams means a higher chance of that happening and with the recent memory-taking with Hatter, that's something that is VERY DISTRESSING. A higher chance of Canary getting bussed means a higher chance of Canary getting killed and Hatter COMPLETELY LOSING IT. So he's very volatile toward the new teams, though he tries hard to rein it in. It's part of the reason why he reacts so negatively to Kit yelling at Coco--because things are SHITTY and YOU'RE NOT HELPING feelings combined with the SHE DOESN'T REMEMBER ANYTHING, WHY ARE YOU ASSUMING SHIT ABOUT HER EVEN IF YOU KNEW HER? So protective feelings all around getting ping'd and he's kind of freaking out about THOSE things as well!
Finally, with the teams, there's Celeste. Celeste is a Problem. He doesn't mind the individuals outside of March, but as a whole, they are kind of Fucked Up Or Something. Despite things being settled about the whole Hatter getting killed by March thing, KYOU HASN'T FORGIVEN CELESTE. And he thinks of Celeste as a unit there, because if they knew March was Fucking Nuts, why the hell are they allowing him to have weapons or being without supervision?! But then Kyou has to stop and remind himself that they did the same with Hatter and the attempting to kill each other was a mutual thing. But there's that whole I CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP/PREVENT THE SITUATION FROM REOCCURING feelings of uselessness, knowing that if he interferes, he could very well get hurt or killed and then... Hatter would snap. It's a lose-lose situation and it's something that distresses Kyou A LOT. (Thankfully, he doesn't know or get the shit March says about him and Hatter, because that would be a WHOLE 'NOTHER BALLPARK.)
With what's going on in the Gallery, Kyou hasn't been able to key into the plot much. He's noticed things have gotten weird and shit like that, but it hasn't really hit him to go out and FIX it--largely because he's got a lot of shit on his plate already. He's still badly hurt emotionally from the two Dragon games and the shit going on with Hatter and March and losing Queen and gaining Duchess that he just... hasn't had TIME to think about things like that! But when he went out into the Orchard and saw the rust getting into their food supply, that just added ANOTHER LAYER OF STRESS to everything else he's internalizing and experiencing. He suddenly realizes he doesn't know how his team has been eating (they all just kind of get food whenever they're hungry. b-bachelor kids Canary...) and that leads into the not knowing what they do which feeds into the whole WELL HATTER GOT HIMSELF KILLED WHEN YOU WEREN'T LOOKING which feeds into the whole WHAT DO YOU EVEN REALLY KNOW ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATES--THE PEOPLE IN THIS GALLERY and huuuurrr it was a train of thought that he had to shut down on, so he went back to Canary's portrait... aaaaaand that's when Duchess turned up. HERP.
So mostly, Kyou's a distressed, psychologically traumatized kid stuck in a distressing and traumatizing situation in the Gallery and he's... trying to deal and is mostly succeeding at being one of the more practical people on his team which helps... but because of this, he takes platitudes badly. Things like "Wow, you guys must be tired" from one of the new teams' people just. Pisses him off. SO MUCH. He also just can't and won't deal with people chastizing him for saying he's okay and then they turn around and smile and tell him that they're fine. Except he's becoming a faker himself and he HATES EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. Soooo... Kyou's in a shaky place but pushing forward because if he stops, then everything Bad Ends when Hatter just flips his shit or something--KYOU CANNOT ALLOW THAT, so his self-preservation levels are insanely high except his motivations to give a shit about his own troubles are tanked. So mostly, he's been shoving all of the smaller things to the side and ignoring them while facing what's happening around him immediately.
And that's currently where he's at. So in the tattoo game, he's getting a huge tattoo on his left arm to cover the scar from cutting himself open during Dragon's game (an act that ended up saving Canary as a whole), and also as a way to distract himself from things going on around him. It may call attention to the beads on his left wrist, but Kyou's already plenty paranoid about that sort of thing, so what the hell. \o/;;;; WHO WOULD JUST PULL A BRACELET OFF OF A PERSON'S WRIST ANYWAY? SURELY IT WON'T HAPPEN.
tl;dr: Cat is a inwardly a shaking ball of fur that is ready to lash out and claw up the face of anyone who makes the wrong move toward him but generally tries to rein in this response. '-'
